And while most vacationers take to the town during the summer months when they have extended vacation time to use, it only makes sense that Interlaken’s true potential is found during the winter months. I mean the town is surrounded by the Swiss Alps, making it the perfect locale for some winter fun. Looking to book a fun-field winter getaway in Interlaken? Here are five must-try activities that will have you looking cool in the cold:

Five Must-Try Activities in Interlaken - Winter Edition

  1. Winter Kayaking - With your feet in the shallow edges of Lake Brienz, it’s only a matter of meters before you’re fully “out to sea” with no sign of the lake's bottom. Did we forget to mention that Lake Brienz is the deepest lake in all of Switzerland? This quick descent of depth makes it the perfect place to enjoy a day of kayaking, just be sure to bring a dry suit if you’re hoping to endure the wintery cold.

  2. Ice Skating - In the winter months, a giant winter wonderland is erected in the center of Interlaken, including a large ice skating rink. You can make a day of it as you and the kids twirl around, enjoy mellow music, or sit down for a bite to eat at any local restaurants or food hall. And when the rink gets too cold for you, you can always warm up with a mulled beer.

  3. Paragliding - Paragliding is an integral part of Interlaken’s adventure sports. Who doesn’t want to soar above the mountains and waters below? Anyone can enjoy a day of paragliding as there is no previous experience needed to take a flight for your life. But don’t fear, there will be an experienced instructor strapped to you at all times.

  4. Jetboat Across the Lakes - For those adrenaline enthusiasts for their next thrill, try jetting across the lakes of Interlaken at nearly 40 miles per hour. And with that much momentum, wait until you start doing 360° turns.

  5. Try a Walking Tour - Just a bus ride away from Interlaken is Lake Merligen. Here you can enjoy a surprising Mediterranean climate, all with a wintery chill in the air. Much of the area can be enjoyed on foot, with a variety of mountain paths and trails that will allow you to explore the mountains and lake at your own pace.
